Keanu Is The Awesome (nay, EXCELLENT!) Antithesis Of Hollywood As We Know It

Never, in all the time I've heard about the famous and numerous nihilistic numpties of Hollywood, who spend their time generally hell-bent on acting like (and I say this politely) idiots, NEVER have I heard a single bad word said about the great and glorious Keanu Reeves. Yes, there are those who revel in criticising his acting ability, but in my honest opinion, those are the people who think Robert Pattinson (or "R-Pattz" as some have the gall to name him) is a good actor, even though he expresses his every emotion with a salient and ever-present frown.

As for Keanu: remember both "Bill & Ted's"? Remember "Speed"? "The Matrix"? "A Scanner Darkly"? "The Day The Earth Stood Still"? Without Keanu, they wouldn't be the EXCELLENT! (had to be done) films that they are, and would instead be something else entirely: absolute rubbish.

So on this day, let us remember that Keanu is not merely yet another actor that regularly bestows the silver screen; he is everything an actor, and a human being, should strive to be in their lives.

After all, can you think of any other actor who YOU would want to protect, stand up for, give thanks to, and really, honestly, want to CHEER UP? Nope? Didn't think so.

So, once more, thank you Keanu Reeves - for being all that you are, and everything that you have done. And (to continue flogging that metaphorical long-dead horse) keep on spreading the B&T philosophy of: "Be excellent to each other!"

I was thinking what I would say if I meet you and I think it would be something related to you as a person not an artist (but can it be so easily separated?). It would be something like: Keanu, I think that this is a miracle, taking into account the circumstances you were into (childhood, school, alone in Hollywood), that you have not wasted the gifts you were given, but let them grow and eventually be able to share them with others. I think you can say to yourself: I made it!!! What I respect the most in you as a person is that you have learnt and developed so much by your own wish and effort that now you are better accomplished and educated than most of the people who think they are smarter than you are. They are not. Very often they do not understand why you said this or that or why you smile or laugh at, but this is not your fault?. As far as journalists concern: once, in the past you were too open and naïve trying to be so genuine and true in your responses, you took! all of it too seriously; now, I think you understand that you can still be open and honest, but on your own terms. You got it! Keep it going. Do not worry, do what you do, remember that every judgment tells us a lot of its author, far more than s/he would like to reveal about her/himself, take care of yourself to be with us as long as possible or even longer.

P.S. What about your acting? When I watch your films I know and can feel what your characters think and feel – isn’t it what is the most important in acting? Your way of acting appeals to me.

What about your roles? I love your Constantine and Bob Artctor, I like your Neo very much, especially his smile, or rather a shadow of a smile, at the end of the first part, I like your Conor O’Neill and Shane Falco, I like watching your two LDAP young officers and older cop in Street Kings, I like quiet Paul Sutton of yours and you made me sympathize with the violent Danny from The Gift, I like Julian, Perry Lyman and Chris Nadeau and many others. By the way, have you noticed how many of them are giving persons? Your Marlon makes me laugh every time I watch “I love you to death”, the scenes with you and William Hurt are the best parts of the film, and one of the best comedy scenes in history. Thanks.

I genuinely believe that Keanu is a very warm hearted bloke and not at all dumb. I went to see the Frances Bacon exhibition at Tate Britain in London and when I walked through the doors Keanu was right in front of me, it was a bit of a shock and I have an expressive face! I have never really understood the fascination some people have with meeting rich and famous actors, other than to be able to tell other people about their star-struck celebrity run-in. I think of myself as relatively selective with the people that I enjoy spending my time with, and it invariably revolves around their personalities and attitudes towards others around them.

To be honest, I didn't know anything about you or your personal life until a few people on the website Reddit began to relay some stories of their experiences and interactions they've had with you, on movie sets, in random public, etc., as well as bit of biographical history regarding some unfortunate stuff you've lived through, and a new leaf has definitely been turned over.

I wouldn't want to meet a famous actor just to tell people I'd met them.. I'd want to meet somebody that would genuinely be a good-natured, conversible person; good company in every sense of the word. You sound like that sort of person, Keanu, and I'm happy that truly good people really do exist everywhere, even in the notoriously conceited and arrogant world of showbusiness.

I've been watching Keanu's films since I was a kid and I have always been fascinated by his mystique. Such a good looking guy, and always so seemingly quiet and humble.

What attracted me to Keanu Reeves was his truthfulness in his acting, which you can't really call acting, because he is living the characters in his movies and what I also admire is that he hasn't be the centerpiece of the film, he always blends in with the ensemble.

His true personality just shines through in his movie roles, he is humble and authentic. That is what I love about him. He doesn't care about a fancy or noble appearance. He is himself no matter what. I have the feeling that through the 18 years I watched him from a distance that what I saw was a soul evolving through all the experiences that crossed it's way. And now at the age of 45 he seems to be at peace with himself and the universe that surrounds him.

I recently found out that my Uncle has cancer and will be losing part of his foot because of it, so I plan on donating to cancer society as soon as I get money (I'm currently unemployed). My other Uncle (his brother) is a cancer survivor, so this is really close to my heart.

To hear about you being so involved in cancer research, I am truly impressed. If you're ever in Ottawa Ontario (Canada!) I hope I get the chance to meet you.

Years ago I was present at some of Keanu rReves Dogstar shows. Lots of fans were out back then, and having fun. Keanu would talk to us sometimes. Something devastating happened to me when my mom passed away from cancer. I was in denial and didnot expect this, as she was also my best friend. I was at a show when talking to Mr. Reeves, I broke down crying.I had just found out the news. He asked what was wrong, I told him and he gave me a big hug. He listened to me as I spouted off about my mom (Is this Keanu Reeves taking the time to listen to me??) and what a great person she was as I grieved.. It meant the wor! ld to me, I will never forget this as he could have walked away, or not smiled, or not taken time out of his busy life to listen. Hollywood celebs dont do this type of thing, and judging by the stories told Keanu has been the same good hearted person for a long time now. No one is perfect, but he sure deserves the best in life as far as I am concerned because he seems to give his best often. I had no idea he was so nice to so many other people too, besides me! LOL!!!! :)

Two years or so ago I was procrastinating. Should've been writing my master's thesis but wasn't. Thus, like so many other procrastinators with a computer and an access to Internet, I surfed.

First news. BBC World News, New York Times, Salon.com, local newspapers. Then entertainment. Movie trailers, best ones twice. YouTube. The quality degenerated. Fashion sites. Lolcats humor. Slowly the scope broadened, and I turned to gossip. Beginning with the clever ones like Gallery of the Absurd, then more and more outrageous shit available in the ether. Perez Hilton. TMZ.

At some point (don't remember which, it's been a while) I googled Keanu Reeves, hit "images" and clicked on. Why you? I don't know. Maybe it's just trivial "destiny" in quotation marks. Maybe it's just that without the quotation marks. Like I said, I don't know. What matters is that past 3AM in the morning my surfing came to a sudden stop with yet another picture of you. Vomiting. Hanging out of a car, apparently in Japan.

I felt sick myself. Not because of what I saw. Or to be more precise, not because of the act itself, but the fact that I was able to see it. Me. In Scandinavia, mid-winter, mid-night. Thousands of kilometers and human lives apart I could see a picture of someone I had had an on-off crush on since the tender age of ten at such a vulnerable state. I felt repulsed by the current visual culture of consumption where no moment is left unrecorded. So I stopped. I closed the laptop and went to sleep.

Few days went by, but it was too late. My empathy had been awakened. The procrastinating side of me took advantage of my lingering curiosity. Sooner than I would like to admit, I was back at surfing everything "Keanu Reeves." In quotation marks, since I cannot even begin to think that anything I've read, seen or heard would've been the real thing.

I tsk-tsked my way through the most hideous BS all the while feeling so bad for you. Not because of the often repeated (and exploited) personal histories. Those things are life. And life happens. No one can defend against it. Good and bad things come and go without asking our permission to enter or leave. All we can try to do is hold on tight and not let go. And there it was. I thought (I might be wrong here) I saw in the hundreds of newer pictures someone who had already let go.

Given up and packed the bags ready to go. The thought made me sad. And it made me think of ways to help that someone. I came up with what I wanted to say. But the rational, normal (ok seminormal) side of me held back. Who on their right mind send letters to people they do not know half a planet away? At a tender age of thirty? Me? Hell no. Most celebrities act like they are gods and should live accordingly. You don't treat us like filth who should throw money at you. I have had many members of my family suffer from cancer and it is a daily struggle. But the only thing we can do is move forward. wish I had some personal story to share, but I don't. However, I had always heard about your generosity and charity and I was always impressed. As an actor I knew you had something too, it only takes watching Little Buddha, A Walk in the Clouds, The Lake House to see that [even if people think I am crazy]. Yeah, I am probably jumping on the band wagon, but when you get an opportunity to tell someone they are doing a good job in life one should take it. I remember how we started out full of idealistic hope of making a difference and how (for me at least) this eventually dwindled into a desperation that our tiny efforts would be futile. Though they were not our doing, the events of the past few days proved me wrong and showed that I should have continued to have faith.

Things are going to change now. I can feel it. And you deserve all this positivity after those years of bashing and being treated as a joke.

I had always liked Keanu's movies - Bill and Ted, Speed - but it was only after I did a search on him, in my early days of the internet, that I became a part of Keanu fandom. I actually had a dream of him after that first night of saving pictures to my hard drive and reading little bits of early fansites. In the dream there was chaos and violence all around me, and Keanu Reeves was standing above me fighting it off as I crouched on the ground below. In the dream I felt him reach down and touch my head...and with that touch, I felt safe. The next day I could not get the dream out of my head. See, I had been living quite a violent and chaotic life at that point. I was in a very unhealthy relationship and had an even unhealthier drug habit. In the weeks and months following, I was swept up in learning all I could about him, in connecting with other fans just to talk about him, sharing news and articles and stories. And while it seems many are just finding out what a truly beautiful soul he is, it is something that many have known for a long time. Learning about how he lived his life inspired me to live mine better, and kinder - both to myself and to others. His beauty inspired a burst of creativity in me and I began my own little site devoted to wallpapers I made and eventually taught myself web and graphic design. The fans I met and connected with became my closest friends. With those friends I was able to make trips to see him play with both his bands and had the chance to meet him briefly a couple times. He was always friendly and gracious and kind, even though he surely just wanted to be the bass player on those nights and not the movie star. One thing I never was able to say to him was 'thank you', so I am so happy to have the chance to do that here.

So, Thank You, Keanu. Focusing on you, your music and your movie career, as "obsessive" as some people might have considered it, shifted my focus from a very bad person and a very bad drug and eventually allowed me to leave both behind me. That was 10 years ago and I believe that you very possibly saved my life. For the way you inspired me in so many ways, I know you definitely made it better.

Ever since, I'm learning : how to watch a movie, how to appreciate acting, how to 'read' a story ; the importance of research , as in reading the original material and all before the first encounter with the movie itself ; that the simple fact of paying attention can indeed take one a long way... I’ve met Keanu twice, and he really came across as a genuinely nice guy. I was lucky enough to get on the green screen set for Chain Reaction, and I watched him do his scenes over and over. Between takes he hung out and chatted with the crew. I got to take his picture, but was too fangirl-shy to talk to him. Rachel Weisz was very nice, too.

The second time I met Keanu was when his band, Dogstar, was in England. They did a show in Aylesbury, and he came out and hung out, signed autographs, posed for pictures, and was an altogether great sport about it all.

I want to thank Keanu for being such a truly nice, genuine person, and for not letting Hollywood fame go to his head. I want to thank him for being nice to fans, even taking time to write autographs and have his picture taken with fans after a long day’s shoot. And of course I also want to thank him for all the movies he’s made, the choices he’s made to not just go for blockbuster scripts, and his never ending commitment to his job and the people he works with. Keanu, I thank you.

Even though people say you suck, I think you’re great.

I had a few friends working special effects jobs on the Matrix movies, he bought all of them fucking HARLEYS for Christmas during the shoot for the second one.

One of those guys, Paul, said that Keanu was the most sincere, humble and lovely dude he’d ever met. Said he eschewed contact with the cast in favour of hanging out with the crew, was the only guy the martial arts coaches respected out of the whole cast, and was the bravest man he’s ever met. That scene in the first Matrix film, the assault on the office tower lobby – Keanu turned down earplugs for all the charges blowing everywhere taking “bullet holes” out of pillars, walls etc, just for authenticity. When he turns and hides behind a pillar which explodes with bullets hitting it on both sides, Paul said “the entire crew was about 15 metres away, with ear protection, and all flinching anyway when the charges blew – Keanu just took it like a complete badass”.

Paul also told me that Keanu once explained to him why he was getting so many action roles. He had injured himself at some point and had fused vertebrae in his upper back or neck, so when he turned his head, his shoulders and chest tended to follow, because of his limited flexibility. “It makes me look dynamic, rather than disabled” was his explanation.

I give Keanu props, as being a fellow techie, there’s nothing more important than having a honest and mutual relationship between the actors and their supporting crew. For gods sake, so many actors just need to learn that putting on a show is a group effort, and it wouldn’t just “happen” without good techies.

A family friend builds movie sets, doesn’t design, is one of the poor dudes that just builds. Anyways he worked on the set for the Matrix and Keanu heard about family trouble he was having and gave him a $20,000 Christmas bonus to help him out. He also was one of the only people on the set that genuinely wanted to know peoples names, would say hello and mean it, and would talk to people as they were his peers and not below him just because they were practically making nothing to build a set. I’ve never heard anyone say Keanu is douche, seems like the nicest person in Hollywood from a second hand experience.

I meat Keanu when he was in Australia doing the matrix. I knew who he was, but when I asked him what he did for a living he answered “I’m a struggling musician”. I thought that was sweet.

Back in the late 90s and fresh out of college I got my first job as an assistant prop designer on the set of Chain Reaction (Keanu was a supporting actor with Morgan Freeman). EVERY DAY for the last few weeks of filming, Keanu treated the stage hands and “grunt workers” (including myself) by taking us out for free breakfast and lunch. He was genuinely a very nice guy to work with.

Since then, I’ve worked on about 30 different sets and have never met an actor as generous and friendly as him. Most actors I’ve seen and worked with are total douches who always think they are better than us. Keanu on the other hand, at the very least, was socially approachable and definitely kindhearted.
